American Kennel Club (AKC) Certifications
S.T.A.R. Puppy Program
S.T.A.R. stands for Socialization, Training, Activity, and a Responsible owner; all the things your puppy needs to succeed in life. The S.T.A.R. Puppy certification is the puppy level of the Canine Good Citizen, the program recognized as the gold standard of behavior for dogs. Upon completion of this program you can receive your puppy’s certificate from the AKC. If you are planning on competing in AKC events with your puppy or participating in therapy dog work, this is a perfect place to start for your puppy.
Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program
As the gold standard of behavior for dogs, the CGC cerification is given to dogs who can show they can behave in the home, in public places, and in front of other dogs. This programs covers 10 important “real world” skills that every dog should have, and are essential for your dog to be a respected canine member of the community. After passing the 10 step test you can receive your dog’s certification from the AKC. If you are planning on competing in AKC events or participating in therapy dog work, this is a perfect place to start.
Advanced CGC: Community Canine (CGCA) Program
The Community Canine is the advanced level of the CGC certification. As with the CGC test, there is a 10 step test of skills that your dog must pass in order to receive the Community Canine certification. While the CGC test is a simulation of “real world” skills, the Community Canine test is designed to test the dog’s skills in a natural environment such as a busy outdoor shopping malls or therapy dog settings. After passing the 10 step test you can receive your dog’s certificate from the AKC. If you are planning on competing in AKC events or participating in therpay dog work, this is a must have certification for your dog.
Service and Therapy Dog Training
Are you in need of a service dog? Do you want to get your dog started on the path to being a therpay dog? Many people feel they have to go to a special breed to get a dog that is capable of obtaining either certification. The truth is that many dogs can make excellent service or therapy dogs with the right training, even a dog you may already have at home. If you are interested in having your dog trained as a service or therapy dog please contact me and we can set up a plan to get you started.
